As you drive, you probably don't think about the thousands of moving parts that make up your vehicles'
engine, I do, but you probaly don't! Your timing belt is one of the
hardest-working parts of your vehicle and performs one of the most
precise operations within your vehicle. Your engine's timing belt works
in perfect harmony with the camshaft and the crankshaft. The timing
belt drives the camshaft, which opens and closes the intake and exhaust
valves. At the same time, the
timing belt synchronizes the camshaft's rotation with the movement of
the crankshaft, which converts the up-and-down motion of the piston
into rotational motion via the connecting rods. That's what it does,
but what it means is that it's an important part and needs to be
maintained with care to keep your vehicle running the way you expect it
to.
Why use Genuine Toyota Parts? Toyota belts match your engine perfectly. They are designed
by the same engineers who built your
Toyota. New belts ensure peak perforance and reliability. Precise
valve operation is critical to efficient engine operation, and the
timing belt is responsible. Timing belt replacement requires
considerable engine disassembly, this is not a 'do it yourself'
operation. The timing belt, while it can last a long, long time, most
engines will suffer severe damage if there is a failure. Should the
timing belt break while you are driving the vehicle, severe engine
damage usually results. The higher the speed, the more extensive the
damage can be. It's important for the health of your Toyota to change
the timing belt at the recommended times.
If your vehicle is a 1999 model year
or newer and is equipped with a timing belt, you should replace it
every 90,000 miles or six years, whichever comes first.
For all other Toyota vehicles
equipped with a timing belt, we recommend that the timing belt be
inspected with the other drive belts at 60,000 miles or four years,
whichever comes first, and every 15,000 miles thereafter and replaced
as needed. The costs involved with inspecting the timing belt may be
similar to those of having it replaced, many customers may find it more
cost effective to replace the timing belt at 60,000-mile intervals.
If you have additional questions we have the information you need in our service center, You can
also refer to your Scheduled Maintenance Guide or Owner's Manual. If
your vehicle is equipped with a timing chain rather than a timing belt,
there is no prescribed replacement interval.
